Know Bishop Dr. Alex Gehaz Malasusa
Bishop Alex Malasusa was born on April 18, 1961 in Kiwira village, Rungwe District, Mbeya Region. His parents are Pastor Gehaz Japhet Malasusa and Mrs. Subilaga Timoth Malasusa. He is the second child in a family of eight children.
He attended various primary schools due to transfers of his father. In 1976 he graduated from Bungo Morogoro Primary School and later joined the secondary school at Kigurunyembe in 1977. After secondary education he studied at the College of Business Management and later joined the accounting course; other courses and training included management and administration.
Alex G. Malasusa worked in various organizations including the National Savings Agency for four years and later joined theology studies during which he participated also in exchange programs with colleges abroad. He had also training in interreligious studies. He graduated in 1995 and was ordained a Pastor in the Diocese of East and Coast on 03 September 1995.
In 1996 he married Ericah Simon Nkonoki and the couple has been blessed with three children, Miriam, Michael and Mercy.
Bishop Alex Malasusa has worked at the University of Dar es Salaam, served in the congregations of Mburahati, Yombo, and Msasani, and has served as superintendent of the Kinondoni (Northern) District. He was also chaplain of Kisarawe Minor Seminary.
In 2004 he became bishop of the Eastern and Coastal diocese of ELCT.
The bishop has been: -
• Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) for 8 years from 2007 to 2016 and head of Tumaini University Makumira College for the same period.
• He was Chairman of the Christian Community of Tanzania CCT from 2013 to 2017.
• He is the Chairman of CCT - Dar-es-Salaam.
• He was Vice President of the World Union of Lutheran Churches. (LWF) for 7 years since 2012 by Member of the WCC Executive Council.
• He was the Chairman of PROCUMURA Tanzania for six years.
• He was the Chairman of CSSC Tanzania for four years.
• He is currently the Chairman of CSSC Eastern Region.
• He is the Chairman of various boards within and outside the Church.
